Hi, I’m Dr. Daniel Bentley

I’m a clinical psychologist, here to help you navigate the challenges of living with addiction (or living with someone struggling with addiction). Together, we can help you build a joyful, meaningful life — even with these challenges.

Here’s a bit more about me:

  • I have a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Hofstra University.

  • I completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Addiction Recovery Services at Zucker Hillside Hospital (Northwell Health).

  • I have extensive training and experience with a broad range of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD.

  • I take a client-centered approach to therapy, working collaboratively with my patients to help them achieve their goals to live a fulfilling, value-driven life.

Our practice is…

  • Our therapeutic approach focuses on you as a human — with real challenges, a complex life, and unique needs. We don’t follow a cookie-cutter approach, but work within every patient’s individual needs.

  • We create a safe environment for you to talk about whatever challenges you’re facing, without fear of judgement. No topic is off-limits, and we’re here to help our patients process whatever challenges they’re facing.

  • Stepping through the door to open up about these challenges takes tremendous courage. We’re here to meet you where you are with the compassion, empathy, understanding, and dignity you deserve.

  • We believe every patient can be helped — regardless of the addictions they may be struggling with. We try to help our patients find optimism and hope in their situations — but never coming from a place of toxic positivity.

  • We’re here to act as your guide, with you on this journey, but not doing the work for you. We’re all about empowering you to take charge of your emotional wellbeing, while providing the support you need to build a meaningful life.

  • Everything we do in our practice stems from evidence-based approaches. The effort you’re putting in is too important to leave to chance, so we rely on techniques and treatment plans that have been proven to work for addiction.

At Shalev Therapy, we offer a comprehensive and personalized treatment approach. We focus on our clients as empowered individuals, collaborating with them to support them on their journey to wellness. Our primary modalities include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP), all within a harm reduction framework.

Our approach

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT encourages you to accept your thoughts and feelings, rather than fight them. By focusing on mindfulness and values-based action, ACT can help you commit to meaningful goals and living a life aligned with your core values, even in the face of difficulties. Together, this approach helps to create psychological flexibility, which can be incredibly valuable on the healing journey.

Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP)

MBRP integrates mindfulness practices with relapse prevention strategies, providing you with tools to stay present and make conscious, healthy choices. This approach helps you build awareness of triggers, develop a non-judgmental attitude toward cravings, and maintain long-term recovery.

Harm Reduction

We take a harm reduction approach, which focuses on minimizing the negative consequences of substance use and promoting safer practices — rather than focusing on abstinence. We meet clients where they are in their journey and respect each client's unique path to recovery, supporting incremental changes that lead to healthier and more sustainable outcomes.
